We pour apple butter in the bottom of our cast iron skillet (with regular melted butter) before pouring in the batter for a Dutch baby - makes a caramel apple type Dutch baby
Some ideas for a surplus of apple butter: swirl some into quick breads, muffins, coffee cakes, etc.; mix it with cream cheese and a touch of maple syrup to use as a filling for cinnamon rolls, shortbread sandwich cookies, etc.; use it with meat dishes such as pork, chicken, etc.; thin it down, add a little honey for flavor, and heat it up for a hot spiced cider drink in winter.
I would add apple butter to cooked oatmeal in place of sugar and milk. It made a warm apple pie like breakfast. It is also good as a topping to pancakes or waffles. I really enjoy your podcasts.
About tea, Ahem 😂 I've mad tea the same way that mama taught me. Bags, steep in boiling water and pour in jug and add water to fill, 43 years! In the last 2 yrs I decided I wanted a stronger tea, so I boil a gallon of water with a family size tea bag and no water and it is sooo delicious!! Also thin out some apple butter and use as syrup for waffles or pancakes. Also put a spoonful or two and add to cooking waffles or pancakes kinda like a mcgriddle. Blessings y'all!
I also use tubs from Dollar Tree or Dollar General and add fabric handles to them to lift up... Put them in your freezer and can better organize what you have and then make a freezer inventory list to show what's in each tub and jeep it by the freezer so that you can mark off each item(s) you take out..
I had a pantry with the same no light issues 😂. My husband just found me a set of motion sensor battery powered lights at Costco that work great. I open the door and the lights come on. They also turn off after a couple minutes of no motion so the kids can’t leave them on.
I definitely need to inventory my freezers. I did my pantry when I bought some new shelving a couple of weeks ago. I was shocked at the amount of chicken stock I found while I was re-organizing.
I use all of my fruit items, jellies, jams, butters and just canned chunks, on winter time hearty bfasts. Things like steel cut oats, oatmeal, baked oatmeal and occasionally over my homemade yogurt dolloped on top of those breakfast meals. Cuts down on adding sweetener to those things.
I like to cook a few eggs into oatmeal and then add a big spoonful of apple butter on top of it in my bowl! We also use it as a yummy spread inside cinnamon rolls in place of the traditional butter, cinnamon and sugar.
I know you can substitute applesauce in baked goods instead of oil, so perhaps you could use apple butter in place of that if the cinnamon doesn’t seem like it would be a contradictory ingredient in your recipe.
Also I've adopted Shelbys, from The Queens Cabinet, method of keeping up with my freezer hoard, lol, seems like it. Use a tablet of graph paper and write down every item and count by pulling a slash. When used just put another slash to make an "x". Has worked really well and I highly recommend this method.
We prioritize local and organic for a similar family size and have about the same budget, minus saving for a beef 😅 we also order from Azure. So lots of similarities. We also have to get gluten free, which pinches our budget even more since I can’t just whip up sourdough as a side (though I wish!!). So you’re not alone at all in budgeting.
I too have an excess of apple butter and use in with the pancake batter, waffle batter, inside cinnamon rolls, add some to icing to flavor it, add to cream cheese to flavor for bagels. Maybe I should do a video on my channel on ways to use up since I still have an entire shelf full of apple butter.
A remote would be good. This reminds me of my attic light, which has a motion sensor. I wonder if I could find one that’s battery operated? Thank you for getting my wheels turning!

@@hollysmith9265 it’s SW7020 Black Fox from Sherwin Williams. My brother is in construction and suggested it after some of his recent projects. We love it!
I love this video! Thanks for sharing. Does a 1/2 beef keep your family fed for a whole year? Do you supplement pork (shoulder roast, bacon, etc) somewhere else? We spend around $1,000 a month on food (we prioritize a high quality, mold-free coffee that kicks that number up a bit) for a family of four (two adults, two small children) but that doesn't include our monthly fund for 1/4 beef + 1/2 pork. I'd love to get that number down to $850 but can't quite figure out how to do it.
@@kaylawalden4599 I buy in bulk, and mainly from Azure Standard. Thats a huge savings. The 1/2 beef gets us a year, although we will go about 8 weeks without steak before our year is up. (Oh the horror, in the eyes of our kiddos!) We do supplement with occasional pork and chicken, and my guys also hunt deer, which add to the mix. We eat more venison than pork as a result. I also grow all of our tomato products for the year, including salsa, plus a few other veggies like peppers, onions, cucumbers and potatoes. Do you garden at all, or shop Azure?
@thehometownhomestead The steak always goes the quickest here too! We love steak and sweet potato bowls from Modern Proper. I do garden, but not a single one of our 8 paste tomato plants survived to produce anything. We had an abundance of cherries and a few medium sized slicers do well, but pastes just flopped. Two years ago, we made enough salsa to last 8 months, but we have to rent community garden beds because of our property and HOA, so it's not as cost effective as having our own garden at home! We do shop Azure, too, yes! And we're fortunate to live in an area where Costco carries tons of high quality, organic ingredients that are comparable (and often lower in cost) than Azure. But we do place Azure orders, probably quarterly, especially for laundry detergent, castile soap, and butter. I think one of the tricky things for me is that the grocery budget is obviously cheaper per month once we've stocked up - but the money it costs to stock up is still money spent on groceries; it's more about when you spent it vs spending it at all. You know? We have variable income, so we try to bulk up the pantry a bit in the better months and spend less in the leaner months. But I feel like it all shakes out to be about the same in my experience once you look at it from a zoomed out perspective. Maybe I'm doing it wrong somehow?! I'd be curious if you have a video (or would make one) specifically on meal prepping when you buy meat in bulk, though. We've been buying 1/4 cows for a few years now, and I know I'm not excellent at sticking to only what we have in our freezer (we love cooking and new meals and flavors, so we enjoy experimenting with new recipes ajuOak Meadow students learn to knit, crochet, play the recorder, and create geometric form drawings to help them develop fine motor skills and cookbooks). But I'm working on doing a better job at it! I've found, with two very small children (3 and 1), I gravitate towards the quicker meals instead of things like short ribs or cuts that require more mental energy.
@@kaylawalden4599 I do have one on bulk prepping ground beef. I love to do that and use it for quick tacos, chili, Philly cheesesteak burgers, etc. I cook up 20+ pounds at time and then freeze it in preseasoned portions. It saves a ton of time when I need a quick meal. As for the budget, once stocked it’s simple for me to keep cost low bec then I can move to bulking up when things go on sale instead of purchase when I’m low, regardless of cost. Does that make sense?
@@thehometownhomestead I saw that video, and loved it! I only have two small children, so I've followed suit but only with 2-4 pounds at a time. But it still works like a charm. Thanks for that idea! That makes sense, yes. Totally get that. Right now we're low on EVERYTHING, and nothing is on sale, which is a bummer!
@@thehometownhomestead Could I ask you one more thing - I don't have a roaster, but I wonder if I were to put several pounds of ground beef or sausage in the slow cooker and stirred it periodically, would that work for batch cooking ground meat?
You can use applebutter instead of half the fat in a cake recipe. Just swap it 1 on 1 (in weight). You'll probably want to reduce the sugar in the recipe too. Don't decrease more, because it can make your cake too dry that way. It's especially great in an apple cake with extra bits of apple in.
